News For Port Loring & District

Not to much happening.  I have been putting a lot of time working with the folks that are making us two nice 8 foot by 12 foot road signs for spring.  One will be put in out by Lost Channel heading East.  The other will be put up just past Highway 524 on Highway 522 heading west. Just about a mile or so on the right past what some call Farleys Corners.  Both are going to be real nice signs which should last for years.  I am working on a schedule  that they both will be up before the 24th of May.  Just in time for our busy season here in Port Loring & District.  Lot of work but end results I am thinking it will be a gift that keeps on giving, and hey, we that live here deserve them.  Long time coming.  Well guess go and have a nice hot tea here and do some chattin’ to my better half, then get at working on some items for the store. Enjoy your day my friends I know I am.

Nancy our secretary for the Local Service Board sent me along this notice this morning, which says , Darts every Friday night at 7:30 and Crib every Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm at the Legion here in town is available for those that would like to attend.  Thanks Nancey. Things like this are important in small towns, as it gets folks out an about, and you know…….that is important now a days.   I give the Legion a lot of credit and they are a great asset to our community let me tell ya.  I would also like to mention here that I have a very good friend  that is making darts for our store this year and if anyone is interested in them drop by come spring and take a look.  Pretty neat gift I would think.  I also have some really neat hand made pens, made from all different kinds of wood.  Well I guess I will go, tea time here and then see where the day brings us.  Have a great day and stay warm.

News For Port Loring

I did hear in the news though that the Long Horned Beetle is heading our way and its main target is the Maple Trees.    The beetles have already been found in several areas of the GTA and quarantine zones have been set up for the destruction of any infested broad-leafed trees, beetles “loose and heading north” from New York state could start chewing through maples here within 10 years they say. They also target  the birch, elm, poplar and willow. I would think it will be sooner than later that they arrive here in the north.  Once they are here it is about impossible to stop them.  Especially using commercial pesticides.  The only way to stop them is promoting, not destroying the predators, which will happen if they use the pesticides of today. There are many natural enemies of longhorned beetles in North America, including predators, parasitoids, and pathogens. Predators include a number of beetles, in some rather obscure groups such as the flat bark beetles, the cylindrical bark beetles, clerid beetles and click beetles; a few flies, including robber flies; assassin and ambush bugs; thrips; and carpenter ants. In addition, a number of vertebrates, including birds, lizards, spiders, scorpions, toads, and small mammals, are recorded predators of longhorned beetles. Parasitoids include wasps in various families including braconids, ichneumonids, and numerous chalcids; and tachinid and sarcophagid flies. Nematodes and fungi have been reported as infecting larvae.   What will they do? Most likely cover our forests here in the north with Pesticides with such magnitude it will destroy every insect, predators included.  Not to say what it will do to us humans. Only way to stop this is to stop all spraying of of our forests here in the north and voice your opinion when ever and where ever you can, especially your MP.  Have a great day my friends.

Quiet, cars and trucks are not even moving here this morning.  Nice day for a walk though as we did have a few flakes of snow over night so it covered up any icy spots that one might slip on.  Thinking my wife and I might just go later on and take in old Mother Nature.  The last walk we were on we seen a nice Buck feeding on some lower cedar branches and a few grouse.  Then on the way back in some thick underbrush I spotted a couple rabbits all huddled up together.  Won’t see that sitting in the house.  Have a great day my friends and be happy, it’s all that really matters in life.

News For Port Loring

Quiet here in our small community.  Woke up this morning to about six inches of the white stuff so cleaning the driveway will be on our addenda for today.  I do have a snow blower but for the past two years now I have decided on cleaning it by hand, if it isn’t to heavy.  To do that I have got myself into a rigorous exercise  program every day before supper and I have to say that I feel a hundred times better.  One has to ease her or his way into these things but the benefits are rewarding to no end.  Thing is folks, the old body is like anything else, if you don’t use it you loose it.  Also proper eating habits thrown in with the exercise will help you even more. I believe that over 75% of our aches and pains and sickness can be over come by changing ones life style using nature as ones guide.  Also remember, don’t let your age stand in the way neither.  Most folks today I figure just use that as an excuse.  Old bones can be made stronger, joints can be made better and muscles can be gotten back, it’s all up to you not the doctors.  Have a great day my friends and be happy, that is all that really matters in life.  Anything else,  is trickery to change your thinking, don’t be fooled.

On another note amazing how warm it has been this winter so far.  Here we are heading to the second week in January and temperatures above freezing.  For myself it couldn’t be any better, weather wise, saves on the heating bills along with makes it enjoyable to be outside.  For the snow mobiles I suspect they aren’t the happiest or the ice fishing folks, but not much one can do.  Mother Nature has a plan in store for us and no matter how hard  the Powers That Be  try to change things, spending billions,  in reality their isn’t anything that can be done.  What will be will be my friends, enjoy each day as it is brought forth,  I know my wife and I sure do.  Have a great day.

Not to forget that no matter how busy they are when I walk in they always take the time to have a chat. Hard to find that anymore let me tell ya.  Have a great day my friends.

If the sun isn’t shinning one still needs Vitamin D, even more so, so……a drop or two would make the old body happy on days like this.  You are the ones in control of you body, not the doctors and who should know better than you of what you need to stay or get healthy?  Enjoy your day my friends.

Still  quiet out there.  For most parts a lot of folks are having a hard time starting their old cars. Myself I plug mine in every night, as with the temperatures we get in this country it is sure hard on a car or truck starting them up cold.  One might think it costs a bit for hydro but end results folks, it is easier on the pocket book plugging them in.  Myself these days I am into doing some shop work.  Got the old wood stove perkin’ away yesterday and today will get to making my flutes and things for our small store for spring.  I enjoy working away out there, gives me a purpose in life one might say.  That’s just one of many I enjoy though.  Well tea time here, one of my most favorite times enjoying a tea and chatting to my lovely wife.  So you have a great day and dress warm if your going outside.  Don’t need anyone catching a cold.

Still quiet around town, see  a few folks heading off to their favorite church this morning being Sunday.  For my wife and I we take each day as it comes to us and treat it no different than any other.  With nature all around us what more could a fellow or gal ask for.  New years resolutions are being made today in hopes to better ones self, but there again my wife and I let things lie where they want.  Old saying is that you can make plans for the future, just don’t plan the results.  I like that one and has worked for us for many a years.  I also like another one, not a saying really, but words of wisdom my old Dad told me many years ago. “George,  If your unsure of what to do in life pertaining to a certain item, do the research, then ask as many folks as you can of how they think on the subject, then if say, 80 % like it one way, you then take the other.  Reason being that 80% of the world is wrong in their thinking.”  You know for four generations our family has used them words or most of us and the ones that has looking at them today, are pretty well off.  Maybe not with a lot of money, but well off enough with their meaning of life, food on the table, a warm home and values that are in abundance.    Have a great day my friends and “Happy New Years to ya.”

Well still pretty quiet around town.  Most folks are just taking it easy I suspect.   Yesterday we went to town to pick up a few things and I have to say the stores were packed full.  Thing is most were carrying packages and things, so that is a sign folks are spending.  Which is what we need to keep this old economy perkin’ away as it should be. Not what the Powers That Be would like you to think, but don’t take much to look through their shenanigans LOL So my friends have a great day an will be back here when a new day dawns.
