Sad Time For Our Children of Today

Today children under five are more comfortable playing computer games than tying their own shoelaces.

Practical skills in children are increasingly being lost, with tradition skills being replaced by , well I don’t know really.

Seven out of ten, two to five year olds are happy playing on-line games compared to just 11 per cent who were capable of tying their shoelaces.

Also children are losing out on social and physical well-being as parents find it easier to entertain them by putting them in front of a computer screen.

As a result less than two out of ten  children could swim unaided while 23 per cent aged two to five were able to make a call on a mobile phone.

Amazingly less than half knew their own home address and only a third were able to write their first and last names.  Sign of the times I suppose, but in my eyes it doesn’t make it right.

Zellers sells 220 stores to Target $1.8-billion deal

Well for one I say it’s a sign of the times.  Thing is folks, the old Zellers stores hasn’t been very productive for a good number of years.  Myself I just don’t like the atmosphere when going into one, nothing against the stores just that’s the way I feel.  You can say what you want about the US stores and maybe not like shopping in them as they are not Canadian, but one thing is for certain, they all have a certain flair about them that draws millions of customers a year. Their secret lies in how they promote their stores, along with how they lay them out. That pertains to the old style family, has worked for them for years and will keep on working, as the USA as a whole is one family and treats everyone as their family.    Lets hope now that Target is of the same calibre as  the rest of the USA stores so that we have another place to spend our hard earned dollars.  Hmm just what I need too.  Thing is though no matter where one shops here in Canada, most of all the items you see or buy all comes from across the ocean, hardly anything any more  says, Made In Canada Or Made In The Good Ol USA.  What a shame too.   My Opinion Only

Internet As We Now Know It Will Be Lost

Internet as we now know it will soon be a thing of the past, at least here in Canada, if we keep allowing these Powers That Be to do what every they want.  These big players like Bell and Rodgers are all about money.  Even the Governments of today bow to them.  Right now these small business’s like Teksavvy are having a major hard time and if allowed to continue, their advancement in the business world will be hard done by.  Thing is folks, some competition is needed here in Canada and with out it we will always being paying these high unfair prices.  Not fair that just a few have the right to making a go of things.  Shouldn’t be allowed and for one, if something isn’t done, certain Powers That Be will be loosing my vote come election time let me tell ya.  I have written them, E mailed them, you name it, does it do any good?  Not likely by the way things are shaping up with this Internet throttling that’s for sure.  This dropping the limits on downloading to around 60 GB or less is the last straw in my books. Sure a lot of folks don’t use that much, but a lot does and even if you don’t you should be allowed to download what ever you want for a favourable price, simple as that.  Dam….. where is this world going.  There is reason behind it though, as more folks will be turning to Internet TV in the future and that is what it is all about, so when the big players put their TV shows on line for downloading, they can charge what ever they want.  Not a good thing folks, so come election time speak out, as we as a whole are the only ones that can do anything about it.   Bottom line, The Powers That Be should have not let this happen.  One day they will wake up an realise that it isn’t the big guys that make a country strong and prosperous, it’s the little guy.

True Grit 2011 Movie

The the original adaptation starring John Wayne was one great show for sure.  Also the scenery was a lot nicer and of course no one could pull on John Wayne’s boots, but….. the new movie has some Grit to it for sure.  Last Friday my wife and I along  with our son Karl went to see it and I would have to say it was a nice evening out.  Only thing is, the treats cost as much, if not more than the show LOL LOL oh well what can you do and I shouldn’t complain as my son paid our way in for us.  Out of a five I would have to give it a three and a half star rating.   One other thing.  These days there isn’t to many westerns being made, so if you would like to see more, then get out there and see True Grit, as the more folks that goes, the more westerns the Powers That Be will be inclined to make.  There is a need for a few good westerns let me tell ya, as it would be a pleasant alternative for folks to see other than those Vampire, Harry Potter, you name it movies.  Not sure why folks even go to see them.  My opinion only.

What’s Happening To Some Of Our Critters”

Now here is some interesting news that for some reason doesn’t even bother folks, as to what is happening in our old world today. For most parts the Powers That Be have said it isn’t us humans that have caused their death, but in saying that I kind of think they are wrong in their thinking.  Something is causing these to die and no matter what they say I don’t believe it is natural.  I am inclined to think that the cause is from us humans and to take it one step further I am kind of inclined to believe that some where killed deliberately. Reason being there is word out there that a lot of folks in certain towns are plagued with birds of certain kinds, along with fish and other species.  So what better way than to get rid of a few and put the blame on something, other than themselves.   Now again my opinion only.

Two million fish washed up in Chesapeake Bay.

Hundreds of snapper fish were found dead on the beaches of Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand on Tuesday. Beachgoers found the fish, many with their eyes missing, lying lifeless on the sand.

On Tuesday, 450 birds plummeted  to their deaths in Louisiana for apparently no reason.
On New Year’s Eve, more than 3,000 red-winged blackbirds inexplicably fell from the skies in Arkansas along with 100,000 drum fish washed up on the shores of the Arkansas River.  If nothing else these should make you kind of wonder what is happening, shouldn’t they??

NORAD, North Bay Tracks Santa

Well since my son works there in North Bay on Base at NORADm I figured I should put this write up about NORAD tracking Santa this Christmas  Also click the link in the below article as it will take you to the official site of where NORAD is doing its tracking.  So here it is.  Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

As Christmas gets closer, the Canadian NORAD Region has put the finishing touches on plans to track and escort Santa Claus when he visits Canada, and has selected four CF-18 fighter pilots who will act as Santa’s official escorts.

425 Tactical Fighter Squadron Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Sylvain Ménard, and Major Eric Haas, an exchange officer from the United States Air Force, will launch from 3 Wing Bagotville, Que., to welcome Santa as the sleigh approaches Canadian airspace. 409 Squadron Commander, Lt.-Col. Eric Kenny, and Captain Chad Ireland of 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alta., will take over the escort duties as Santa makes his way into Western Canada.

Special NORAD SantaCams, positioned around the world, will take photos and video of Santa and his sleigh as he journeys around the world. The SantaCams instantly download the photo and video imagery so that it may be viewed by children worldwide on the NORAD Tracks Santa website, www.noradsanta.org, on December 24. All of this information will be available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Chinese.

The Canadian Air Defence Sector Operations Centre at 22 Wing in North Bay, Ont., will alert NORAD when their radar and satellite systems detect Santa approaching North America. Two CF-18 Hornet fighter jets from 3 Wing will welcome Santa as he enters Canadian airspace off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. As Santa flies across Canada from east to west, two CF-18 Hornets from 4 Wing will escort through Canadian airspace so that he may safely conduct his Christmas voyage.

On December 24, children can also receive updates on Santa’s Christmas Eve journey by calling the traditional “NORAD Tracks Santa” telephone hotline at 1-877-HI NORAD, or by emailing NORAD at [email protected]. Last year, the NORAD Tracks Santa website received over 13 million unique visitors from 231 countries and territories around the world. On Christmas Eve alone, NORAD “Santa Trackers” answered more than 74,000 telephone calls and answered 3,500 emails over a 25 hour period ….

Bill C-428. Is One Bill That Should Never Happen

Now here is something us older folks should be taking a look at.  For myself I think it shouldn’t be made law as I believe our old age pension has to be earned not just given away.  Just crazy thinking in my eyes.  My opinion only.

Dear Ms. Consul:

I am pleased to respond to your electronic message, which was forwarded to me by the Office of the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, regarding private member’s Bill C-428.

As you know, Bill C-428 proposes to amend the Old Age Security Act to reduce the residence requirement for entitlement to a monthly pension
from ten years to three years. This private member’s bill was introduced in the House of Commons by M..P. Ruby Dhalla, a Liberal Opposition
Member.

As the Minister responsible, I have been very clear that when this Bill
comes forward we will strongly oppose it.

The Old Age Security (OAS) pension is paid to seniors in recognition of the contribution that they have made to Canadian society, the economy,
and their community. The OAS program is non-contributory and is based solely on age and residence in Canada after the age of 18. The ten-year
residence rule is consistent with many other countries that have residence or contribution requirements associated with their national
pensions to ensure that benefits are given in proportion to years of residence or affiliation with their pension programs. With this in mind,
it is felt that the current ten-year residence requirement represents a balance between a reasonable contribution to Canadian society and the
right to receive a lifelong pension.

It is estimated that reducing the ten-year eligibility requirement to three years would cost over $700 million annually in additional OAS and
Guaranteed Income Supplement benefits. Given that the OAS program is funded entirely from general tax revenues, this would be costly and place
an additional burden on the Canadian taxpayer..
Yours sincerely,
The Hon. Diane Finley, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development

809 Area Code Scam

Kind of interesting of how folks like to make an extra dollar these days.  Take A Look.  Kind of makes you want to be a touch more on the ball before doing things that others ask of you.

,

Parents

This long distance phone scam causes consumers to inadvertently incur high charges on their phone bills. Consumers usually receive a message telling them to call a phone number with an 809, 284, 649, or 876 area code in order to collect a prize, find out information about a sick relative, etc. The caller assumes the number is a typical three-digit U.S. area code; however, the caller is actually connected to a phone number outside the United States, often in Canada or the Caribbean, and charged international call rates. Unfortunately, consumers don’t find out that they have been charged higher international call rates until they receive their bill.  The Amounts are quite high one should remember, more than what most can really afford.

AT&T recommends the following tips to help avoid the 809 area code scam:

  • Return calls to familiar numbers only. As a general rule, return calls from numbers that contain familiar or recognizable area codes. You may call your directory assistance or long distance operator to check the area code location.
  • Carefully read your telephone bill. Make sure that you only receive charges from your provider of choice. Ensure you thoroughly understand charges listed on your phone bill, have chosen to do business with all of the listed providers billing for those charges and have authorized additional fees invoiced. If your local service provider has changed, you will receive a final bill from the former provider and a notice of service disconnection.

If you believe that you have been scammed:

  • Contact the carrier with whom the charge originated, whose name and toll-free telephone number should be printed on the same bill page as the charge in question. Often, the problem can be resolved with a single phone call.
  • If the carrier with whom the charge originated does not agree to resolve the problem, contact AT&T. AT&T will work with you and the carrier to help remove fraudulent charges from the phone bill.

Warning For Bad Soup

Might not hurt to check your cupboards in case you have a jar or two stuck away.  For us my wife does all ours up fresh from our garden.  One way of making sure what you are eating is safe to eat.  With Precautions of course.  Just another reason that come spring you get to planning out a good size vegetable garden.  I have a spot around forty feet by thirty feet and it supplies all our needs and then some.

WikiLeaks ‘Revenge’

You know this WikiLeaks has gotten a lot of attention lately and in my mind it has a lot of merit to it.  Myself I can see a lot of good things about this fellow portraying the truth,  more so it out weighs the bad.  One has to remember that this fellow is just posting what is really happening in our Governments, companies and places like that. Information being handed to him by some pretty high uppers. All that this fellow is doing is presenting them to you as they unfold.   Myself, in my mind, I have always figured these things were happening, just didn’t have any real hard proof, this fellow does and is letting everyone see it for themselves.  I figure it this way, one should always stand up for what’s right, and speak ones mind.  Don’t be afraid of going against the grain if you feel your right in things, as it is your life and you are entitled to say or do what you believe in, or what you do not believe in, whether it be Religion, Politics or what ever. Today though most are afraid to speak their feelings, or what they know to be true, as they are afraid of repercussions, from the Powers That Be, Family Members and so on.  Why is that?  Well my view is, we have had our minds clogged up with other folks thinking and now today can’t fend for ourselves.  I I also believe that this just didn’t happen on its own and was slowly worked into our every day life.  My opinion Only.+

Do You Want To Save Your Internet In Canada????

The only way this is going to really help is if we as a whole start standing up for ourselves and let these so called Powers That Be know that we run the country not them.  What should be done is the Government should step in and stop this.  Will they?   I doubt it but, hey, you never know.  Click Link at the bottom of the page which will take you to a place where you can sign the petition, also leave a note to go along with it, can’t hurt that’s for sure.  Don’t let them scare you neither, your the only ones that can save our Internet.  Stand up for what’s right.  My Opinion Only hoping to make it yours too.

The CRTC just decided to let your Internet Service Provider put a meter on your Internet!Stop the Meter

Bell Canada and other big telecom companies can now freely impose usage-based billing on independent Internet Service Providers (indie ISPs) and YOU. Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services.

This means we’re looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay more for less Internet.

This will crush innovative services, Canada’s digital competitiveness, and your wallet.

We need to stand up for the Internet.

Trash & Treasures Port Loring Ontario

Trash & Treasures

What a small community can do when everyone pulls together. Well that is exactly what has happened here in Port Loring. In 1975 our first Trash & Treasures came to being, a store filled with items donated for the sole purpose of raising money for the Argyle Fire Department. With the way things are being done these days, especially in small communities like ours, getting funding for new Fire trucks is almost impossible. With our trucks slowly deteriorating and no funding available, the community took it upon themselves to see what they could do.

Later on the Fire Department applied for a grant to build the new Trash & Treasures in the middle of Port Loring, as the old Steel’s store was just to crowded to display the goods, along with being to deteriorated to safely work in. Luckily the grant came through. Purchasing a new Firetruck though was another story.

Over the years an into today Trash & Treasures has been operated entirely by volunteer help. This team of over 40 some volunteers, coordinated by Doris Lampman, has to be commended, as with out them our Fire Department would be in dire need. The new Fire Truck you see in the picture was totally purchased with proceeds coming solely from Trash & Treasures. A ticket price of $199,000.00.

Amazing isn’t it, what can happen when a community as small as ours puts all their efforts into achieving something like this. Endless hours, in all kinds of weather, these volunteers have worked and will continue to work so that the folks in our small community can rest in bed at nights knowing that our Fire Department is at the very least agile enough to keep them safe.

I would also like to thank all the rest that help make this possible, the public for your donations and also all the customers.

A success story yes, but lots more has to be done, as with all small communities it seems we get left by the way side and when surviving means, working together.  Click Picture To Enlarge !!   Great Picture For sure but then……….hey I took it.  LOL

Newest Reason Why Our Honeybees Are Dying

Here is the newest info on what is killing off your honey bees.

The sudden and mysterious disappearance of honeybees in the United States over the past year may be due to a virus, according to a new research paper by an international team of scientists.

The pathogen, called Israeli acute paralysis virus, was detected in almost all bee hives tested during a survey of hives afflicted by what has become known as colony collapse disorder. The pathogen is rarely found in healthy hives.

The discovery will likely help put to rest rampant speculation about the source of the strange collapse in U.S. bee populations.

Beekeepers in the United States began noticing slight declines in bee numbers in 2004. The scale of deaths increased dramatically in the past year, with some apiaries losing up to 90 per cent of their hives. The workers in colonies of the highly social insects would disappear without a trace.

The enormous scale of the destruction prompted worry that some new environmental threat might be killing useful insects. Some speculated that the missing bees might have become disoriented by the recent proliferation of radiation from cellphone towers and died while foraging for nectar. Others theorized that new genetically modified crops were poisoning the bees.

But scientists who worked on the new research, which is being published in the current issue of Science Express, now believe the most likely explanation is a new infectious agent.

“Our extensive study suggests that the Israeli acute paralysis may be a potential cause of colony collapse disorder,” said Ian Lipkin, an epidemiologist at Columbia University.

The death of bees had caused widespread alarm in the agricultural industry. Although most people associate bees with honey, the insects are far more important for their role in pollinating crops. About 90 foods, ranging from apples to cucumbers, depend on bees to ensure that fruits and vegetables develop.

Any threat to bee numbers could affect the global food supply. An estimated $2-billion worth of crops in Canada depend on honeybees for pollination, and about $15-billion in the United States, where the collapse has already led to difficulties in pollinating crops.

The researchers also found the virus on live bees imported into the United States from Australia, and in royal jelly samples from China. Royal jelly is the food bees produce for queens, but it is also sold as a health food for humans.

The discovery of the virus has raised speculation that the United States inadvertently allowed it into the country through the import of Australian bees. This was allowed in 2004, at the urging of the agricultural industry, to boost the number of hives available for pollinating high-value crops such as almonds.

The import of the bees coincided with the first reports of unusual problems in bee colonies.

All the hives infected with the virus either used Australian bees, or were stored near colonies that imported the insects.

To date, Canada has had no known cases of colony collapse disorder, said Danny Walker, president of the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association.

He said Canada doesn’t allow the importation of entire bee colonies from Australia, although it does allow apiaries to buy individual queens, which are then seeded into domestic hives.

Scientists who discovered the virus, and analyzed genes of micro-organisms found in bees, said they do not know if the pathogen itself causes colonies to die off, or whether it weakens the bees and makes them more susceptible to pesticides, poor nutrition and parasitic mites.

The virus was first described in Israel in 2004, leading to its name. Researchers there noted that infected bees – which exhibited shivering wings and paralysis – would die just outside their hives.

One perplexing finding is that bees in Australia don’t seem to be affected by colony collapse disorder. The researchers speculated the reason might be that bees there are not infected with varroa mites, which are found throughout in North America. The mites suppress the immune system of bees, making them more vulnerable to other threats.
